22 May 2012 - Union boss earns big bucks, NUM secretary general earns over a million a year and more on Mywage South Africa

National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) general secretary Frans Baleni has had a R40 000.00 increase in his salary, taking it to R77 000.00 a month. Meanwhile, the average mineworker in the coal, platinum and gold-mining industries earns approximately R5000.00 a month.

Baleni has defended the decision to increase his salary, saying it was "market related". He also said he was not responsible for the increase, saying that salaries were determined by the NUM human resources department.
