21 Aug 2013 - New labour amendments good for workers - August 2013

Labour Minister Mildred Oliphant has said that Amendments to the Labour Relations Act will enhance the protection of workers. The Labour Relations Amendment Bill was adopted by the National Assembly on Tuesday August 20.

Some of the provisions include affirmative action – whereby the labour department would have more powers to fine companies which did not comply with their employment equity obligations. It also proposes that employees who are placed with a client by a labour broker for longer than six months will be deemed to be employees of the company.

The bill will also set up a nationwide database to monitor employment and assist with government's goal of creating more jobs, decent work, and sustainable livelihoods

"The amendments also seek to bring the provisions relating to child labour in line with international standards and to strengthen the mechanisms for enforcement of basic conditions of employment, including wages," said Oliphant.
