The Decisions for Life Young Women’s Skills Market Day

More than 60 young women attended the first Decisions for Life Young Women’s Skills Market Day, which was held on Saturday September 10 2011 at the Labour Research Service in Salt River.

Speakers from a range of organisations and governmental departments shared their experience, while dance and free beauty treatments formed part of the line-up.

The aim of the day was to provide a space for different organisations and representatives to demonstrate what they could do to assist young women progress in their personal and professional lives. There was an emphasis on skills development, ranging from how to access skills training through to finding or volunteering for jobs to acquire experience and develop skills further. Getting a work-life balance – and learning how to relax and pamper oneself! – was also part of the programme.

Speaking on the day

Included in the role of speakers who generously gave their time to contribute to the day was Nezaam Joseph from the Department of Economic Development and Tourism, Hazel Bowen from the Association of Women Graduates, Myrtle Witbooi, General Secretary of the South African Domestic Service and Allied Workers’ Union, and Claire Matthee from the Cancer Association of South Africa. Also contributing to the day was Rape Crisis, the New World Foundation and young women workers from sectors such as the Post Office and Banking.

A catered lunch and time for the women to network rounded off a successful Decisions for Life gathering which attendees said was well worth it.

“We are very pleased with how the day went, and that such a wide variety of people were willing to share their knowledge and skills with this group of young women,” said Safea Solomon, SASBO representative for the Decisions for Life Trade Union campaign.
