HIV/AIDS hits industries hard - October 2010

AIDS-related deaths resulted in R2.4 billion in insurance claims this year from the mining, transport, heavy construction, fishing and agriculture sectors.

The costs fall directly on employers through the premiums they pay for group life insurance benefits.

In acknowledging the heavy toll that HIV/AIDS can take on the economy, many companies have created initiatives to assist employees and their families in dealing with the disease. This includes internal wellness programmes, which feature voluntary counselling and testing and suport structures such as allowing workers time off in order to recuperate, without losing their salaries.

Some examples include ABSA bank, which has spent R75 million on wellness programmes over the past three years, Anglo American, which has over 6000 employees enrolled in HIV disease management programmes, and Standard Bank, which has had a wellness programme since 2001.
